Smallest park gives rival run for its money

It features just three trees and a bench – and a game of football is almost certainly out of the question.

And now this tiny park in Staffordshire is laying claim to being the world's smallest after the official record holder was dubbed a "glorified plant pot".

Already Britain's most miniature, Prince's Park should be elevated to the top of the global list, according to organisers who will host the world's shortest fun run next month.

Kevin Wilson, from KP Events, wants the Burntwood park to secure international recognition and wrestle the title of world's smallest from Mill Ends Park in Portland, America.

"Mill Ends Park in no way can be classed as a park, it's a glorified flower pot," Mr Wilson said.

"How can it be classed as a park? You can't even walk in it.

"Prince's Park should be named the world's smallest. It is already the smallest in the UK."

Mr Wilson came up with the idea of the world's shortest fun run at the Burntwood park after researching the world's smallest park on the internet.

It will take competitors 55 paces and around 20 seconds to complete the race – and 150 people have already applied to take part.

"It will be the first time ever that a fun run has taken place at the park," Mr Wilson, a father-of-two from Whittington, near Lichfield, said.

"We just thought it would be something a bit fun and different."

The World's Shortest Fun Run is taking place on May 6.

Runners will be setting off in groups of five or 10 and there will be an official start and finish line.

Money raised from the event will go to We Love Lichfield, a group that provides small grants to a wide range of projects based across the city.

KP Events also organise the Lichfield Half Marathon and the Lichfield Cathedral Dash.

Prince's Park was created to commemorate the marriage of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863.

The park is fenced and has seating. The three commemorative trees at the park are named Faith, Hope and Charity.

Miniature fencing has been installed at Mill Ends Park, the current holder of the Guinness World Record for the world's smallest park, to ensure it does not fall foul of the rules.
