The carpenter, thought to be in his late-30s, was taken to hospital after he tripped and fell at the site of the car park that is being built, as part of the £50 million superstore at the town's Crown Centre.

Five ambulances and a helicopter were called to the scene yesterday afternoon.

West Midlands Ambulance Service had been told the worker was unconscious.

The man was taken by ambulance to Dudley's Russells Hall Hospital and is believed to be stable.

Mark Glover, project manager for Bowmer and Kirkland, the construction company in charge of the scheme, said: "We are carrying out an investigation into what happened."
