Residents complain of lorries nuisance
Fed-up residents are having their sleep shattered by lorry drivers running their engines through the night to keep refrigerated loads fresh, it is claimed.
Householders say HGV drivers, who regularly park up overnight, are also using the area as a toilet and a litter dump.
Amongst the rubbish strewn along the old Wolverhampton Road in Laney Green, near the M6 Cannock turn-off, are bottles of urine and cigarette packets.
South Staffordshire district councillor Mike Boyle said: "It seems this once peaceful area is becoming an illegal, unlicensed lorry park. This appalling desecration of our countryside needs to be addressed."
Residents said lorries were increasingly using the lane, close to Junction 11, as a stopover on long journeys. It was also being used as a dumping ground for tyres, household bin bags and builders' rubble.
Terry Murphy, a resident on Saredon parish council, said he and other householders had complained to the police and district authority about the noise and mess.
"The problem is bad enough as it is but it will escalate if something isn't done very soon. My brother-in-law, who is a neighbour, said there is more traffic down here at 1am than there is during the day."
Councillor Boyle said the HGV drivers were ignoring two authorised lorry parks less than one-and-a-half miles away on the A5, near the Four Crosses pub. "The noise, in particular, is unacceptable," he said.
Spokesman for South Staffordshire District Council, Jamie Angus, said they would be sending environmental health officers to the scene.
