The driver, who is believed to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics following the smash at the Lidl store in Lower High Street, Cradley Heath.

It is believed the man suffered a heart attack but investigations are still taking place as to whether it happened before or after the collision at around 7.15am.

Firefighters evacuated four members of staff working at the store at the time.

The main road outside the supermarket was cordoned off by police, along with a section of pavement directly outside the store.

Bricks were dislodged by the impact of the silver Rover colliding with the front of the building.

The shop remained closed as structural engineers were called to ensure the building was safe.

The man was freed from the vehicle by paramedics and resuscitation started straight away after the crash. He was then taken to hospital for treatment.

Watch commander Adrian Passmore, of Cradley Heath fire station, said: "Ambulance crews were treating the man when we arrived.

"It appears he had suffered a heart attack at some point. He was taken to hospital by paramedics."
