Last night Sandwell councillors gave the green light for the huge development on land at Watt Street and Messenger Road in Smethwick.

The 103 new-build units, from developer Barratt Homes, will be built as part of the £84 million Windmill Eye scheme regeneration plans for the town, after being voted through unanimously by Sandwell Council's planning committee.

Windmill Eye sits within A457 Soho Way and Grove Lane to the north, and High Street and Cape Hill, to the south.

The application relates to three separate parcels of vacant council-owned land immediately off Messenger Road.

The largest of the three areas of land, subject of the application, is the site of the former Messenger Road maisonettes, covering an area of about four acres. The former Victoria Court site has an area of around one acre, while the smallest of the three parcels, known as the James Watt site, is 0.7 acres. The sites have been cleared and grassed.

The plan voted through is the last of four current applications within the Windmill Eye area.
