Recycling lorries ready to hit South Staffordshire roads for blue bins at last

A fleet of 16 new lorries are preparing to head out to collect thousands of blue bins across South Staffordshire – ending weeks of confusion over recycling.

An average of 150 residents a day have been putting out their new bins despite being told they could not be collected until April 1. Now the vehicles are ready to head out on their routes.

The new bins are costing almost £900,000 and will let people put all their recycling into one bin, as well as giving them more space.

The bins will hold almost four times the amount of recycling compared to the previous box and sack.

But the old fleet of recycling bin lorries was not geared up to be able to carry the new bins meaning residents have had to wait for the new lorries to be ready.

Bosses believe the new system can save around £15,000 a year because they are currently having to send out 4,500 additional or replacement green boxes every year for people who have either run out of space for their rubbish or have broken them.

Councillor Brian Edwards, leader of South Staffordshire Council said: "Bin collections are one of the most important and valued services we offer to our residents and the fact we're making it even easier to recycle is wonderful."

He urged people to make sure that their bins were put out on collection days by 7am because the times could change as a result of the new service being launched in the area.
