Sale of the plaque, originally at Cable Street Mills Factory, Wolverhampton, caused outrage as the owner put it on ebay for £400.

Wolverhampton City Council tried to keep it in the city after anger by veterans and councillors.

The mystery owner has now given it to Wednesfield and Woodend Royal British Legion Club.

Council spokesman Tim Clark said they were delighted and added that the council would be giving the club a donation towards restoration costs of the memorial.

Ian Moore, club secretary, said: "It has some minor damage, but nothing major.

"We will get it cleaned up and remounted and it will go on display in the club."
