The Memorabilia and Comic Con show comes to Birmingham twice a year, bringing stars of film and television, as well as hundreds of stalls of merchandise and fans dressed as their favourite characters.

Among the attractions at the weekend event was Gary Dourdan, who plays Warrick Brown in CSI. Dourdan, making his first UK appearance, said he had only been to one other Comic Con show in San Diego, but he felt "right at home" among the fans.

The 46-year-old said: "I see myself in all of the people here as I'm a comic freak.

"I collect a lot of different types of comics and I give them to my son also – he's 10.

"I just saw R2-D2 (of Star Wars) around the corner and I had to stop. When I was about 12 or 13 and Star Wars came out, I thought it was a cowboy film. But I was on the edge of my seat for the whole film."

Among those keen to see the TV star were friends Jun Field and Daniel Becker.

Jun, aged 15 of West Bromwich, said: "There are lots of people to see here but this is what I'm here for. It's my favourite series on TV, along with CSI: Miami."

Daniel, also 15 and from Rowley Regis, said: "It's crazy how many people are here." Also at the event was Claire Finch and her seven year old daughter Charlie from Dudley who met comic character Luigi.

And for those a few generations further back who were wondering whatever happened to young stars such as Jeremy and Jemima from the 1960s film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang or to the young boy who played Oliver in the first film version of the Charles Dickens classic, they were there – signing autographs for £15 each.

There was a steady stream of fans keen to hand over their cash for a signature from the stars, with long lines most notably in front of Jeremy and Jemima – otherwise known as Adrian Hall, now a 54-year-old drama teacher, and Heather Ripley, now aged 52 and living in Scotland – and the Avengers and Goldfinger star Honor Blackman, now aged 86.

Other stars at the event on Sunday included English actor Warwick Davis, model Samantha Fox, former Doctor Who Colin Baker and Terry Molloy, who appeared as Davros in Doctor Who.
