The Mitre, in Lower Green, Tettenhall, was one of the city's best known venues but has struggled in recent times – changing hands on six occasions in the past two years.

At the start of last year it was taken over by the owners of Don Salvo after a £35,000 refit, however it closed six months later. It has now been taken on by an unnamed private buyer, who has put it up for let or sale.

But it has also emerged that plans have gone in to Wolverhampton City Council to convert the pub, which was built around 1878, into a five-bedroom home even though estate agents say it is still being marketed as a licensed venue.

First City property consultancy is dealing with the site and agent Neil Hazlehurst said: "The property is available as a licensed premises and our instructions are the same as they have been.

"Viewings are still being booked and there is plenty of interest in it." It is not known whether the owner is beind the planning application to turn the site into a house.

Tettenhall councillor Jonathan Yardley said residents had hoped the pub would be redeveloped soon, but were expecting it would remain a pub or restaurant.

He added: "I expect the owner is looking for the maximum return they can get. Pubs being converted into properties is a trend across the country. I sit on the planning committee and there are similar applications almost every month. I would like to see it become a successful pub as it is a prime location."
