Wednesbury Carnival will be back in summer
The hugely popular Wednesbury Carnival will return after it was washed out last summer by heavy rain, organisers said today.
The carnival, held in Brunswick Park, which attracts more than 1,000 visitors every year had to be cancelled last year due to poor weather which also hit a major event to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
But now organisers have announced this year's event will be back on July 13 and will be better than ever.
This year's carnival president Michael Middleton, who is also a member of the Rotary Club, has announced details of what visitors to 2013's event can expect after missing out last year - which could include the Mayor of Sandwell being escorted by a motorcycle display team.
He said: "We will have a fun fair as normal, there will be a karate display team and a gun carriage display.
"Young dancers from various schools of ages ranging from four to 16 will be performing throughout the day, as will a DJ and various live musicians such as the Shindiggers, and Bhangra dancers on our stage. There will also be go-karting, bouncy castles, magicians, balloon artists, and a birds of prey show.
"It takes a tremendous amount of effort to organise something like this, so we were disappointed last year's event was cancelled.
"A lot of charities benefit for the funds raised at the event, around £3,000 to £4,000 each year, so it was a shame for them it was cancelled too."
Age UK, which operates a tombola and jewellery store, in Union Street, is among those to benefit.
Assistant manager Jean Bowker said: "Two years ago we raised more than £150, which is good for a tombola. We missed the money last year, but mainly we missed the involvement. The year before was a wonderful day, the sun was shining and people were out in their droves. We just hope everything's going to be up and running this year."
Last year would have been the 43rd annual event in the town. The planned Queen's jubilee celebrations, in Brunswick Park, Brunswick Road, were also cancelled the previous month.
