Chaos fears on work at busy road in Sedgley

Worried residents in Sedgley have voiced concern about five months of roadworks which they fear will cause chaos on one of the town's busiest roads.

Between March 4 and August 16 Gospel End Street will become one-way heading away from the town centre as far as its junction with the town's High Street.

Vicar Street will be made one-way westbound and Hall Street will be closed.

The restrictions will allow a stone wall to be dismantled and rebuilt further back from the road so a footpath can be created.

But residents and shoppers fear the effect the restrictions traffic may have on the town's shopping strip.

Margret Whiting, aged 61, of The Northway, said: "It sounds like it will be a right mess – five months on one of the busiest roads here. It's just crazy. It's hard enough for shops here with the lack of parking."

Sarah Wheatley, of Sedgley Hill Avenue, said the temporary system would be "chaos". She added: "This road through the High Street is already really busy. There must be a better way. Hopefully they'll be done before six months."

Sedgley councillor Michael Evans, however, told residents to be patient and that the disruption would be worth it in the end.

He added: "Gospel End Street is an extremely busy road. There are three sets of school children that have to cross it and elderly people also have much difficulty.

"Now the stone wall will be going and it will be put back a bit to allow room for a footpath to be built where there is none currently."

During the work there will be a diversion along The Northway, A459 Wolverhampton Road, High Street and Dudley Street.
