Crews were quickly after the Staffordshire bull terrier fell into the lock on a stretch of Dudley Canal.

The Express & Star revealed the dog's adventure once it was back on dry land and being cared for by an animal charity, but now footage has emerged which shows just how the creature managed to make it to safety.

The dog, named Angel by veterinary staff, was seen by a member of the public in the canal lock, which has steep brick sides leaving the animal unable to escape.

Snow was falling as crews from Cradley Heath and Tipton were called out but the low water levels left them unable to reach the dog. A specialist rescue team were called out to help and they hatched a plan to set up ladders to climb down into the lock near Factory Road, in Tipton.

The ladders had to be secured against the vertical lock walls and towpath to allow the firefighters to safely climb down. The amazing footage shows the firefighter ankle-deep in the murky water as they try to free the dog from behind an existing foot ladder.
