Teaching and non-teaching workers at Phoenix Collegiate, based over two sites in West Bromwich and Wednesbury, have been told "staffing adjustments" may be necessary.

A report said the cost of maintaining the two sites and transporting students between them is taking its toll saying the deficit is expected to be £921,259 by 2014/2015.

The report said the school "cannot specify either the posts or the individuals at risk at this stage".

But it added: "It is essential to stress we are hoping to avoid any sort of compulsory redundancies."

It is just the latest blow for Phoenix, following a previous redundancies and a damning Ofsted report.

Lena Davies, a spokeswoman for teachers union NASUWT, said: "We are in the informal stage of consultation over redundancies and are hopeful governors will accept volunteers for redundancy."

Phoenix Collegiate has confirmed the school has launched a period of consultation with staff.
