The youngster was believed to have been out walking with his father in a field off Broadholes Lane in Wheaton Aston when he became trapped up to his waist shortly before 1pm yesterday afternoon.

His father was unable to free him and raised the alarm. The boy was stranded for around an hour until he could be freed by firefighters who dug down and also used planks of wood to try and get him out.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman Suzie Fothergill said: "Once rescued from the mud, the boy was treated on scene for hypothermia. Crews wrapped the boy in thermal blankets before airlifting him to University Hospital of North Staffordshire for further assessment and specialist treatment."
