Smethwick Heritage Centre has been shut since December while bosses carry out maintenance work and make decisions about future exhibitions.

Six young volunteers from Juniper Training, based at The Waterfront, Brierley Hill, spent all day yesterday giving the previously scuffed white walls a fresh lick of cream paint.

Volunteers co-ordinator Sharron Wise said: "The team that came have been fantastic. They have freshened the whole place up and made it look brighter. Their effort and enthusiasm was brilliant."

Museum bosses have organised a day of activities for when the High Street venue reopens its doors on March 6.

Taking place from 10.30am until 3pm, there will be a bring and buy sale as well as a film showing and a photograph exhibition featuring the canals of Smethwick. Ms Wise added: "It is an opportunity for anyone with an interest in Smethwick and its people to meet up for coffee and a chat, take a look around the museum and find out about the events that will be taking place throughout the year."

There will also be a museum roadshow at the council house in High Street, Smethwick on March 16. The centre has announced new opening hours. It will now be open from 11am to 3pm every Thursday and Friday and 11am to 12.30 every Saturday. On the first Wednesday of each month the centre will open from 10.30am to 3pm, when refreshments will be available all day.
