Checks have revealed conmen are offering counterfeit versions of the iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 at a fraction of the real price but police said the phones run the risk of catching fire if left switched on for too long.

It is understood the phones have been brought to Sandwell from China in boxes of 20.

The scam came to light during a routine stop check of a white transit van in Oldbury, when four phones were seized.

One man has been cautioned while Trading Standards officers and police have launched an investigation.

Sandwell Trading Standards manager Bob Charnley said: "I would advise the public to avoid these products as you could very well be wasting a considerable amount of money."

The cost of genuine iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 range from around £400 to £700.

The fake phone looks virtually identical to the real phone but the operating systems within them are sub-standard.
