Oldbury roadworks delays start as iron pipes are removed

Gas works taking three months to complete were starting in Oldbury today.

Motorists face lengthy delays as National Grid replaces worn out underground gas pipes.

The junction of Brades Road and Brades Rise will close for about four weeks from today and Bury Hill Road is expected to close for about the same length of time from March 11.

Traffic on the east side of Brades Road and Brades Rise will go along Wolverhampton Road, Portway Road, Shidas Lane, Rounds Green Road, Oldbury Road and along Dudley Road. Traffic on the west side will be diverted via Dudley Road East, Lower City Road, New Birmingham Road.

Drivers are being warned that during Bury Hill Road works, traffic on the east side will go along Wolverhampton Road, Portway Road, Shidas Lane, Brades Road, Brades Rise and vice versa. Definitive dates of closures will depend on progress of the work and will be on warning signs throughout the area.

Stan Best of National Grid said: "The underground cast iron gas pipes Oldbury have worked well for decades, but they're now at the end of their working life.

"Because of this, we're replacing them with modern polythene pipes that are much more robust and reliable."
