Charges will go up by an average of 3.1 per cent across the board from April 1 – meaning residents will have to pay around £135 extra a year.

Cannock Chase Council currently owns around 5,388 properties including flats, bungalows and houses.

Housing boss Councillor Frank Allen said today that the council had no choice but to put up rents again this year. The Government wants all rents for council-owned properties across the country to fall in line.

Councillor Allen said: "The Government is making us increase rents. People will have to pay on average an extra £2.60 a week.

"It will, however, be worked out on people's circumstances such as how many bedrooms they have and their income. We were told some time ago that we were going to have to implement these rises. This increase was forced upon us."

Cannock's full council is expected to approve the changes at a meeting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile council rents in Wolverhampton are going up by £4 a week from April.

Wolverhampton Homes manages 23,500 properties for Wolverhampton City Council.
