Driver, 77, killed in Staffordshire as road crashes hit region

A driver aged 77 was killed in Staffordshire in one of a number of accidents on the region's roads in the past 24 hours.

The driver of a Ford Fiesta died after her car collided with a lorry on the junction of the A449 and Lower Drayton Lane in Lower Drayton at 6pm yesterday. The driver of the lorry and his passenger were uninjured.

Meanwhile, drivers faced delays of up to 45 minutes on the M6 today after a two-car crash blocked the carriageway at the junction with the M54 at 10a near Wolverhampton. Queues stretched back to junction 4 at Castle Bromwich and the link with the M5 at junction 8. It also caused tailbacks on the A454 in Walsall near junction 10 of the M6.

A man was also taken to hospital today after his car overturned several times on the motorway in Staffordshire. The crash took place at around 2.50am on the M6 Toll northbound between junctions T5 for Shenston and T6 for Burntwood.

Firefighters had to cut the man from his car before he was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital.

And a two-car crash in the Black Country saw an elderly man taken to hospital last night. The accident took place in Glastonbury Crescent, on the Mossley estate in Bloxwich, at around 7.30pm.
