Peter Odemwingie sent home from training by West Brom after QPR row

Star striker Peter Odemwingie was today sent home from the West Brom training ground after being criticised as "wholly unprofessional" by club chairman Jeremy Peace.

He was banished after he completed an incredible 250-mile round-trip on a mission to join Queens Park Rangers.

Odemwingie made a late-night dash from the West Midlands to West London in the hope of a big-money transfer – only to be turned away by QPR in an bizarre end to the January transfer window.

And Mr Peace today attacked the Nigeria international, who faces an angry backlash from West Bromwich Albion fans and team-mates after attempting to force through a money-spinning move to the capital.

Odemwingie was told to go home and return to face the music next week. But speaking as he left the club's Great Barr training ground today, he insisted he had done nothing wrong and that he travelled to QPR in good faith.

He also reiterated his desire to leave Albion and asked bosses to "reason" with him.

"I am an emotional person who sometimes makes mistakes," he said. "I love Albion and I love the fans. I did perform here and I did enjoy myself.

"I will always love the club. I will still leave. I understand you must honour your contract but the club know I wanted to leave."

QPR had previously had two bids, worth £2.5m and £3m, rejected. He was turned away from the club late last night when it became clear Albion would refuse his move.

Mr Peace said: "Peter has acted wholly unprofessionally. He must now accept the fact he remains under contract for a further 18 months and focus on his commitments."

West Brom held an emergency board meeting into the early hours of today to discuss the club's response to Odemwingie's actions.

Odemwingie had held talks early yesterday with Hawthorns officials following a week of angry statements – some on his own Twitter page – after the Baggies rejected his transfer request last Friday.

He then drove to London last night in the hope that the clubs would agree a transfer fee before last night's 11pm deadline.

But West Brom pulled out of the deal when Rangers refused to include Canada winger Junior Hoilett in part-exchange.

And, after Odemwingie was interviewed live on television claiming he expected the transfer to be completed, the Baggies issued a statement insisting the 31-year-old did not have permission to negotiate with QPR, managed by Harry Redknapp.

Odemwingie spoke to QPR fans in the car park and looked bewildered as it became clear that he was being turned away.
