Horses loose on Wolverhampton's Penn Road

Two horses were the slightly bizarre mane attraction on a busy Wolverhampton road during rush hour this morning.

The roaming animals were discovered in Penn Road near the ring road, by the Mercedes garage, at 8am.

Police were called and used their blue and white tape to reign the horses in and lead them to safety in a nearby field.

The horses were being cared for by a helpful resident while owners were contacted.

Office worker Ann Brown was on her way to work when she spotted the horses.

She said: "It's not something you see very often on the Penn Road so I was more than a little surprised.

"They looked quite relaxed though and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

"They looked as though they were out for a morning stroll."

Tettenhall Horse Sanctuary was contacted by police to see if the charity could be of any assistance.

Owner Billy Wilson said free-running horses in busy streets were becoming a common occurrence.

He added: "Hopefully they weren't abandoned, but we're getting that a lot these days and we hear some desperate stories.

"The horses would just have been grazing – they move from grass to grass and keep their body motion going."
