New date for Liam Keeling evening at Banks's Stadium

A special fundraising event in memory of a popular young footballer who died of meningitis will go ahead on a new date, after Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Dean Saunders could not make the original evening.

The new Molineux boss will be the special guest speaker at the dinner after a Sky Sport switch in Wolves fixtures meant he could not attend the original date. Liam Keeling, of Cheslyn Hay, died suddenly in October 2009, aged 13, just days after saying he felt unwell.

Former Aston Villa striker Saunders had already been signed up by Liam's parents Andy and Georgina for the annual sports dinner on March 1 while he was manager of Doncaster Rovers, but now the event, at Walsall FC's Banks's Stadium, has had to be switched to March 15.

The death of the popular pupil of Cardinal Griffin School in Cannock from meningitis B prompted Andy and mum Georgina to collect cash for the Meningitis UK charity – an effort which has now raised more than £125,000.

Postman Andy, aged 53, said: "We booked him a while ago when he was still at Doncaster, and when he moved we thought we might have to get another speaker – but Dean said he was still OK to do it.

"But we've only found out in the last few days that Sky Sports have changed the date of the Wolves match with Watford to Friday, March 1 which clashed with our event."

A table of 10 can be booked for £320, with individual tickets available for £34 each. To book, call 07800 816871.

Future events planned for the memorial fund include a quiz night at keen footballer Liam's old club Wyrley Juniors.
