Stourbridge school to close for staff walkout
A school in Stourbridge will be closed tomorrow after teachers announced they were striking over controversial plans to convert it into an academy.
Teachers from the NASUWT union will walk out of Redhill School, in Junction Road, over the dispute from 8am.
Headteacher Stephen Dunster and chair of governors Linda Bonehill said in a statement on the school website they regretted the actions of the union.
The school's governing body voted to make an application for academy status last year, which was accepted by the Secretary of State for Education.
General Secretary of the NASUWT, Chris Keates, said: "There is no educational or financial imperative to justify converting Redhill School to an academy. The teachers are justifiably proud of the standards they have achieved and feel passionately that academy status would be a retrograde step for all concerned."
