Special £2.1m housing will offer adult support in Dudley
A £2.1 million project to build apartments for adults with learning disabilities in Dudley has been unveiled.
Council bosses have earmarked land in Sedgley and Wollaston for the housing developments.
The council is now applying for £385,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to complete the cost of funding the schemes. It was revealed in a report by Dudley Council leader David Sparks and Councillor Khurshid Ahmed, cabinet member for housing, libraries and adult learning.
The authority wants to create six supported apartments, helping people with learning disabilities to live independently, and three general needs houses at The Walk, Sedgley. It is also proposing eight supported apartments in Norfolk Road, Wollaston.
The report says: "There remains considerable demand for appropriate homes where people with learning disabilities can live independently with support.
"The bid will provide additional affordable housing, particularly in areas where there is a shortage of appropriate dwellings.
"It will also contribute towards regeneration and the use of infill land which is currently vacant."
A decision on the council's bid for funding is expected to be announced in May.
The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has made £160m available to support the development of affordable specialist housing for older people and adults with disabilities outside London.
Work has recently been completed on almost 100 new council houses – the first to be built in the Dudley for more than 20 years.
The 99 properties include two, three and four bedroom houses, two bedroom bungalows and three blocks of flats each comprising six two bedroom flats for residents with learning disabilities.
The schemes were generally built on old infill and garage sites.
