Work on Cannock sports sites may take five years
Work to build new facilities at Cannock Stadium and bring the former landmark site back into use could take up to five years, it was revealed today.
Football pitches and an athletics track are the preferred options for the site according to the results of a seven-week public consultation.
A report on proposals will be presented to Cannock Chase Council's cabinet on Thursday.
If approved, council bosses will appoint a consultant to look at the best ways to use the site and then work will begin.
Council leader George Adamson today said: "It's brilliant that we have reached this stage. The public said they wanted what was already there before it was knocked down.
"Once we agree on the proposals, all the work will be finished in three to five years."
Councillor Adamson said work would start at the former stadium site in the next 12 months.
Work will be phased, according to the report due to be presented to the cabinet later this week.
The consultant appointed will carry out feasibility studies and then report back to the council. The cost of the project will also be decided at that point.
The stadium in Pye Green Road was demolished in 2009.
In May 2012 the council decided to remove the former stadium site from the list of land available for housing development and develop it as public open space and for sport and leisure purposes.
Last July bosses at the council decided to ask the people of Cannock what they wanted from the site and a public consultation started in October.
Councillor Adamson said most people wanted to see toilets, football pitches, athletics areas and paths for walkers.
The council received over 400 responses, including 392 online or paper questionnaires.
