Fifteen high-rise tower blocks in Sandwell are to be transformed under a multi-million pound development programme planned for the borough.

The huge revamp, which is part of a wider scheme, will begin later this year and be completed by 2018 at a cost of £43.2m.

Sandwell Council will spend a total of £67m on high-rise blocks in the borough by 2022, as part of an overall £492m housing investment plan that will see council-owned buildings and homes revamped over the next decade.

Council chiefs have now revealed the programme of work for the high-rise buildings, and how much each revamp will cost. The work will include making the buildings energy-efficient by replacing single glazing with double-glazed windows and fitting insulation. Bosses will also be focusing on external refurbishment, and improving the condition and quality of the homes.

The first buildings to be revamped will be in West Bromwich, and work is due to start in August. High-rise blocks in Smethwick, Tipton and Oldbury will then be revamped over the next five years.

The housing investment programme will also see work undertaken on other council-owned homes in the borough.
