Sacked maths teacher loses appeal
A maths lecturer, who was sacked from a Black Country college, has lost his appeal against his dismissal after bosses claimed students he taught failed to achieve.
David Muritu, who worked at Halesowen College, vowed to continue his fight and says he is now considering taking his case to an employment tribunal.
It comes as union officials today staged a protest at the gates of the college's Whittingham Road campus, to coincide with a college open day.
In a statement on behalf of the college, personnel advisor Rachael Makinson said Mr Muritu "was dismissed for his consistent failure to carry out the fundamental part of the job as a lecturer in the maths department".
She said the college had provided Mr Muritu with "intensive support" during the past three years to improve standards.
Speaking to the Express & Star, Mr Muritu dismissed the college's claims saying he was "shocked" by their accusations. "I'm going to tribunal to seek a claim for unfair dismissal," he said. "I have had a lot of support from students and parents who say I'm a good teacher."
Three other lecturers have been sacked by the college.
