Raiders hit 40 Sandwell homes in string of break-ins
Burglars have struck at 40 homes across Sandwell in recent weeks, police revealed today, stealing hi-value electrical goods and jewellery after gaining entry through unlocked doors and windows.
Officers say they are investigating a string of break-ins across the borough, particularly in Hateley Heath, Tividale and Great Barr. They are now giving out property marking equipment to residents in certain parts of Sandwell and are urging people to lock their doors and windows to curb further attacks.
Det Ch Insp Paul Betts from Sandwell police said: "It is important that people check their doors and windows are locked, especially if you are upstairs.
"An insecure break could mean that not only do you lose treasured possessions, but you might struggle to claim off your insurance company.
"Many burglars are opportunist and will simply take any chance they can get – some prowl around looking for easy targets. An open door is a huge temptation, but one that is simple to address."
Items stolen in recent weeks have mainly been high value portable electrical goods and jewellery.
Police often seize stolen property, but are unable to trace the owner. So areas which could be vulnerable to burglary, are being offered property marking, using a hi-tech solution which contains a unique forensic code similar to DNA.
Property can be marked with a UV pen to record their postcode, or unique barcode stickers are available from police for larger household items.
Officers are also urging residents to register valuables such as mobile phones, mp3 players, cameras and bicycles on Immobilise.
He added: "Many personal electronic items, such as smartphones, can download location software or apps which use GPS to locate property."
