Donat Campbell returned to his car to collect a baseball bat before launching the onslaught on pest control officer Sean Parr, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The 48-year-old smashed the windscreen of the victim's van and hit the man on the arm during a scuffle in which both fell to the ground in Willenhall Road, Wednesfield.

The pair swapped insults from inside their vehicles after leaving the Black Country Route, said prosecutor Mr Paul Spratt, who added: "There was an argument over which lane they should have been in and this continued as they travelled along the dual carriageway."

Mr Parr remained on the outside lane to avoid any parked vehicles on the inside but Campbell finally managed to undertake him near the Neachells pub before stopping in front of the van, the court heard.

Mr Spratt said: "Both men got out of their vehicles and there was a meeting of entirely different views.

"After they returned to their vehicles the defendant came back with a baseball bat recovered from his car.

"He smashed the windscreen of the van and the other man was struck on the arm while trying to protect himself. As the man tried to get out he was struck on the jaw and bitten on the right hand."

Medics later discovered that Mr Parr had a fractured forearm as a result of the incident that had a "dramatic effect both personally and professionally" on him, continued Mr Spratt.

He said the attack had cost Mr Parr £1,000 in lost wages, disfigured his arm and led to him losing his confidence, drive and ability.

Mr Stephen Cadwaladr, defending, said the incident was "a moment of madness". Unemployed Campbell from Wodensfield Tower, Wednesfield admitted assault, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon on September 5.

Judge Rosalind Bush told Campbell: "This was appalling behaviour."
