Action call on Walsall road as 70-year-old is hit by car

A 70-year-old woman was taken to hospital after being hit by a car on main road in Walsall – sparking fresh calls for improved safety measures.

She was hit at a zebra crossing near Kings Hill Park, Darlaston Road, – the main route between Darlaston and Wednesbury – at about 10.40am yesterday and was taken by ambulance to Walsall Manor Hospital. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

West Midlands Police said that officers were called to reports of a Renault Clio being in collision with a pedestrian. They said it took about 20 minutes for the scene to be cleared.

Darlaston South councillor Paul Bott said that action was needed to reduce the risk of accidents on the road.

He has contacted Walsall Council highways officers about assessing the possibility of introducing new safety measures.

He said: "People have been saying months and months it is an accident waiting to happen, it needs some traffic calming measures in place."

Some work was carried out in Darlaston Road last year following the concerns of pensioners in finding it difficult to cross the street. The zebra crossing was realigned and repainted by the council.
