Danny "Dannyman" McCalla was blasted six times – hit in the head, chest, shoulder, arm and thigh, when gunman Vincent Tony Ashman fired the weapon at the Tropical Harmony venue in Bilston, it was claimed.

In the hours after the killing, Ashman booked a flight to Jamaica and fled the UK two days after shooting Mr McCalla, the court was told.

The 38-year-old defendant, known as Chopper, only returned in July last year when he was extradited back to England.

Prosecutor Miss Rachel Brand QC told Birmingham Crown Court that Mr McCalla, from Dudley, had gone to the club with two friends on November 21, 2009.

She said CCTV footage showed the defendant and three of his friends entering the club at the same time as Mr McCalla and that at 4.18am, the defendant was approached by a friend of Mr McCalla on the dancefloor.

After a short conversation, the two of them walked towards the rear of the club, "going slightly out of view of the cameras," she said.

"The next thing that can be seen is Mr McCalla walking towards the same area.

"One of the owners of the club, Michael Chambers, was down at that part of the nightclub at the time. He saw this incident start. He saw Mr McCalla strike out at the defendant first. He used a bottle and what looked like a police baton. He then saw a flash and heard a loud bang. And as Mr McCalla tried to move away quickly and then stumbled, Mr Chambers could see the defendant pursued him and fired more shots."

Following the shooting, Ashman was seen on CCTV walking out of the nightclub among other revellers who were rushing outside.

Mr McCalla, 50, was taken to New Cross Hospital but died from his injuries.

Ashman denies murder. The trial continues.
