Staffordshire burial ground set for £250,000 revamp
A cemetery in Staffordshire will undergo a £250,000 expansion to create more burial space after Cannock Cemetery closed.
And bosses say a new site could be created in the town to ensure people can be buried where they lived.
Under new budget plans Cannock Chase Council wants to extend Stile Cop Cemetery, in Rugeley. Cannock's site in Pye Green Road, which has been closed to new burials for about four years.
Cabinet member for planning at Cannock Chase, Gordon Alcott said the extension of the Stile Cop Road site would last for 10 to 15 years if the council were unable to find an alternative site for Cannock.
Councillor Alcott said: "As it stands, only burials in other graves are available now – for example if a family has bought a triple grave - or for those with cremation remains.
"That's why we're in the process of looking for new burial ground for Cannock, so those who wish to be buried in Cannock can be.
The proposals will be part of the consultation budget to be discussed at the council's influential cabinet meeting tomorrow.
