Staffordshire Police today said officers were called to the store in Victoria Street, which opened two months ago, on Sunday night after complaints about noise.

Tesco's decision to shut the car park comes a month after police successfully won an injunction stopping boy racers racing up and down six main roads in Cannock.

Matt Francis, spokesman for Tesco, said: "We've been working with the police on this issue and as a result we'll be closing the underground car park on Sunday evenings from now on."

The issue has been raised on Twitter by the leader of the Conservative group on Cannock Chase Council, Paul Snape, who says there were 17 cars at the store on Saturday and 10 on Sunday.

Since the injunction was passed, boy racers in Cannock could face two years behind bars. The court order lets officers disperse street racers after it emerged operations tackling the problem cost taxpayers £500 a week.

It prohibits street racing along The Orbital, Eastern Way, Watling Street, Lichfield Road, Walsall Road and Avon Road.
