Foundations laid for £8m Wolverhampton primary school

An arson-hit primary school in Wolverhampton has started to rise from the ashes, with building work on its replacement moving forward after the devastating blaze.

Wilkinson Primary in Bradley was targeted by arsonists in October 2010.

An £8.2 million project to build a new school was unveiled last year and the site has now been cleared with the foundations being laid ready for the new structure to take shape.

A timber frame will be erected in mid-February and the new school is expected to be finished by the end of November.

Headteacher Tina Gibbon said: "Things are progressing really well and we can finally say that the end is in sight.

"It has given us a tremendous boost and we are regularly taking photos of the work to show the children."

The charred remains of the school were demolished shortly after the blaze and since then the school's 357 pupils have been using 16 mobile buildings.

The new school will accommodate an extra 105 places as part of the council's efforts to cope with a baby boom in the town. It will feature a new dance studio and more communal areas that can be used for group activities.
