The first-ever Christmas markets in Union Street were held on the three Thursdays before Christmas and were a big draw for customers.

They also provided a boost for businesses in the town.

More than 100 people signed a petition calling for the permanent introduction of the markets, and council chiefs today confirmed they would be running for another six months.

A consultation with shopkeepers was also held to see if they backed the return of the market with the overwhelming majority in favour.

Of the 48 traders consulted, just one opposed the markets and one did not indicate whether they were for or against. The remainder were all in support.

The Christmas markets were organised by the town councillors and Bescot Promotions and saw more than 40 stalls set up in the town. They will now return from this Thursday after proving so popular.

Wednesbury councillors Elaine Costigan and Olwen Jones were the driving force behind the markets, helped by the voluntary group Wednesbury Celebrates.

Wednesbury South Councillor Olwen Jones, said: "It is really positive news. It is great news that the council is allowing a further extension of six months."

Wednesbury North Councillor Elaine Costigan added: "This is wonderful news. We have brought life back into the town and it is going to continue."
