Walker falls 8ft down hole in Wolverhampton as cover stolen

A walker fell 8ft down a drain which had been left open after metal thieves stole the cover.

The victim was forced to call firefighters for help by using his mobile phone after plunging down the hole in Broadmoor Road, Bilston at around 6pm.

The manhole cover is believed to have been removed by metal thieves and the hole could not be seen in the dark.

Crews from Bilston and Dudley fire stations worked with paramedics to release the man who complained of back pain. Fire fighters took 45 minutes to lift the victim out using a triple extension ladder.

The man was taken to hospital for a check up but was not believed to be badly hurt.
