Cannock Chase council tax bills set for 2pc rise

Council tax bills in Cannock Chase are set to go up by two per cent – after councillors said they planned to reject an offer of funding to freeze them for the third year running.

It comes after the government slashed around 20 per cent from Cannock Chase District Council's funding, taking around £1.2 million out of the authority's budget for the next two years.

But all local authorities were offered the equivalent of a one per cent rise – about £60,000 for Cannock Chase - from the government if it kept the rates frozen.

That grant will be sacrificed in order to raise twice as much directly from taxpayers.

The government has capped council tax rises at two per cent and said any authority that wants to introduce a higher increase must hold a referendum.
