Protest on sacking of Halesowen College maths lecturer
A protest has been held outside a college in the Black Country over the sacking of a maths lecturer.
David Muritu was dismissed from his job at Halesowen College and three other maths teachers face disciplinary action.
Union bosses said Mr Muritu was told he was sacked due to students' results, but they say they are above the national average.
They claim he was also dismissed because of his union activities as he is branch secretary for the University and College Union. Dozens of protesters held a rally outside the college in Whittingham Road yesterday in support of Mr Muritu and his colleagues.
Halesowen College today denied it acted improperly and said action to address concerns about performance was not "undertaken lightly".
Nick Varney, University and College Union regional official, claimed the college was determined to dismiss Mr Muritu. "It is impossible not to link this to his union activity where he has legitimately challenged the principal over the years."
Mr Varney said a branch meeting was due to take place tonight to discuss possible industrial action. He said disciplinary hearings for three other teachers had taken place yesterday and the outcome was expected later this week.
Mr Muritu, aged 41, said life had been "very difficult" for him since his sacking but he had had a lot of support from staff.
College principal Keith Bate said: "Given ongoing internal procedures, it would not be appropriate to comment on the details of the situation which has given rise to the protest taking place. I wish to make clear that action to address concerns about performance and attainment is not undertaken lightly."
He added:?"Allegations of improper conduct being made against the college which appear to be associated with this situation are completely refuted."
