Jay Afzal had driven to Valerie Flowers's home to take her to an appointment at Walsall Dialysis Unit but he grew concerned and called the police and paramedics when the 75-year-old, who regularly uses the firm, failed to answer the door at her house in Darlaston.

Mrs Flowers, who suffers from kidney problems and has to have dialysis treatment three times a week, has been using Darlaston-based Yellow Cars for nine years.

She said: "I couldn't move out of my chair and couldn't get my breath. He told the dialysis unit and they got in touch with my son.

"The paramedics and police arrived and my son had a key to let them in. Without Jay I would have died."

She was taken to New Cross Hospital for further treatment. Mr Afzal, aged 39, of Franchise Street, Darlaston, said: "I'm glad she's OK. She's a lovely lady."
