Families in demand on metal plants

Residents are demanding action to tackle two foundries they say have blighted their lives for the last 25 years.

People in Shale Street and Wolverhampton Street, Bilston, say smells and noise have been emanating from Formcast and Metalcast for decades.

They have twice collected more than 300 names on petitions but say no action has been taken.

Recent complaints have led to Wolverhampton Council calling on the firms. But inspectors say the inspectors are satisfied with measures being taken.

Phil Farlow, a carer who lives in nearby Coronation Road, said: "Problems experienced have included a foul smell, thick acrid smoke and there have been damage caused to cars by small particles of metal. We have to close our windows due to the smoke and or odour entering our homes."

Mr Farlow said he was determined to get action, although the firms insist they are complying with regulations.

Metalcast owner Mike O'Connor said: "We had an extraction unit fitted a good few years ago. We have inspections each day and keep a record of any smells. We melt less than a ton of metal each day, which for foundries is very small, and we only produce twice a day for between 20 and 40 minutes."

Formcast director David Powell said odour absorption equipment had been installed, and insisted production lines do not run late at night or early morning. He said: "This has been a foundry since 1876, far earlier than the homes have been there. We do our best to be good neighbours."

Andy Jervis of Wolverhampton Council, said:?"We will assess the best options going forward for both business and residents."
