Damage costing £30,000 was caused at Loxdale Primary School in Bilston when thieves ripped lead from the roof, flooding classrooms, corridors and offices.

Staff and parents have been working over the last month to get the building ready for children to return at the start of the new term.

Some rooms still need re-decorating and carpet is yet to be laid in one classroom but headteacher Trish Scott said the school was safe to re-open.

The decision was taken today after an inspection by staff and workmen. Work will continue at weekends and in the evenings to avoid disturbing lessons.

Ms Scott said today: "It is more important to get the children back in and get their education back on track. We are so grateful to everyone for their help – staff have been working round the clock to get the school open."
