A foul smell is plaguing streets around Wednesbury, sparking complaints from residents.

Council bosses are now investigating in a bid to establish the cause. Sandwell Council environmental health officers are carrying out tests around Wednesbury town centre to pinpoint the source of the odour so action can be taken.

But councillors today said officials had so far been unsuccessful in determining the cause although work was still being carried out.

The smell was first reported around the Darby Road area of the town but had since spread to other streets in the area and was steadily growing worse, they added.

Councillor Geoffrey Lewis said work would continue to take place until the source of the odour had been found and the matter dealt with.

"It is a cause for concern. It is a terrible smell and has been steadily growing worse over a period of time," he said. "At times it is so bad residents who have hung their washing out to dry have had to take it in.

"It started around the Darby Road area but has since been reported as far as Potters Lane and Bridge Street which means it has spread across a significant area of the town centre.

"Work on this will be continuing until the cause of the smell has been found. Officers will then be able to decide the best course of action to take to deal with it."

An update on the situation is expected early in the New Year.
