Fears on 'disastrous' budget cuts by chief

Cuts to Government funding in Cannock Chase were today labelled "disastrous" by the council leader.

Councillor George Adamson said cash would be reduced by around 20 per cent over the next two years. Budget cuts were announced earlier this week and the only place in Staffordshire harder hit than Cannock Chase is Lichfield.

The city council will lose 8.93 per cent of its funding in the next year alone.

Councillor Adamson said his authority is now having to look again at its budget, as the cuts have left it £185,000 worse off than anticipated.

He today blasted the Government, saying the decision is "illogical" as Cannock Chase is the poorest area in the county in every aspect such as housing and health.

Meanwhile, Staffordshire County Council had its funding slashed by 2.2 per cent and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue has been hit by cuts of 4.4 per cent.

Stafford Borough Council's spending power has been reduced by one per cent and Staffordshire Police will see government funding fall by £3.8 million to £117.4m in 2013/14.

Stafford Borough Council spokesman Will Conaghan said that while some parts of the settlement are tough, the authority has managed its finances well so will be "able to manage".
