Motorists using the A460 Cannock Road at Shareshill faced delays of up to half an hour. Heavy rainfall in recent days has led to water seeping from the nearby fields and on to the road.

Traffic was backed up to the M6 junction at Cannock and back to Featherstone as a result. A series of flood alerts have been put out around the region by the Environment Agency due to the heavy downpours which have plagued the region in recent days.

Some sunshine is expected tomorrow but heavy rain is forecast for Saturday and Christmas Eve when temperatures could drop as low as 4C or (39F).

Meanwhile, it has been announced that work will be carried out to combat flooding misery at a problem-hit road in Walsall. Parts of Stoney Lane, in Bloxwich, will be closed for around 21 weeks.

A new underground tank is being put in place by Severn Trent to store excess water during heavy rainfall and stop nearby homes from flooding.

Water company chiefs today said flooding can be "deeply distressing" for residents and they wanted to try to solve the problem once and for all.

Work to install the underground tank is set to start on January 7.
