First look at hotel planned for Stourbridge
Developers today released a computer generated image showing how a new £6 million hotel development on a main route into Stourbridge could look.
Premier Inn has lodged plans for an 80-bed hotel and Brewers Fayre restaurant.
If planning permission is granted, 65 jobs would be created and the complex would open in spring 2014. Bosses say the hotel would provide a boost for local business and tourism.
John Bates, head of acquisitions for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said: "Stourbridge has been on our target list for a long time and I am very pleased we have now submitted our planning application for a new Premier Inn hotel and Brewers Fayre restaurant in the town.
"The town centre site is an ideal location for a new Premier Inn hotel and restaurant and it is well positioned to explore the Black Country and surrounding countryside. Our investment will create approximately 65 new jobs, attract additional visitors and support key businesses in the area."
The developers said around 100 residents and businesses had already been consulted and five letters of support had been sent in. Chairman of Stourbridge Township Council Margaret Scott has backed the proposals saying it would bring a welcome boost to the town and help to make Birmingham Street more attractive to visitors.
A planning application for the Stourbridge site has been sent to Dudley Council by Whitbread Property Plc and Barberry Developments.
Cox Hire Ltd is moving to a new site in Netherton.
The application said the scheme would create "an exciting gateway development for Stourbridge".
An L-shaped four-storey hotel would be built with a car park providing 122 spaces.
It would come hot on the heels of work starting on a 63-bed hotel in Dudley. It is expected to be completed in May next year and will include a ground-floor restaurant.
