The building next door was formerly The Dorchester and the Beach nightclub.

Wolverhampton City Council has been given the power to award one licence for a new casino by Parliament and bosses at the Rubicon are competing with Wolverhampton Racecourse, which wants to open the country's first ever "Racino" by adding a casino to its site.

City council bosses confirmed today that 107 objections have been lodged against the plans for the former Dorchester site with people saying they are concerned about the location.

A council licensing committee will be held on December 20 where officials could decide whether the application should proceed.

The council was one of only 16 authorities that was given the right to grant a Casino Premises Licence for a small casino by Parliament in 2008. Around 100 jobs would be created.

Rubicon is owned by Stockport based Casino 36 Ltd. Its managing director Adrian Ballard said: "A large number of the objectors have not realised that we already operate a casino in Temple Street."
