Comet axe to see 60 jobs go across region

Nearly 60 jobs will be lost in the coming days as Comet stores close in Halesowen, Wolverhampton, Stafford and Cannock, it was revealed today.

The shops are all being closed as administrators axe more than 60 branches by Monday with the loss of hundreds of jobs nationwide just before Christmas.

Deloitte, which has already cut hundreds of jobs at the collapsed electricals giant since it was called in last month, is closing the Cannock store today with the loss of 18 jobs.

The branches in Wolverhampton and Stafford close on Sunday, with 27 jobs being lost – 14 in Wolverhampton and 13 in Stafford. Halesowen will close on Monday with its 13 staff then facing the dole.

Around 50 Comet stores have already been shut and around 60 more are due to close nationwide by Monday.

A Deloitte spokesman confirmed today that the last of Comet's 236 stores will be closed by December 18, putting a total of around 6,600 people out of work.
