A gym and leisure centre in Brierley Hill was closed today after thieves stripped copper piping from the water system.

The David Lloyd complex was forced to shut after the latest raid in the epidemic of metal thefts to strike the West Midlands.

Members turning up today expecting to enjoy the gym, indoor swimming pool, tennis and other facilities at the Pensnett Road complex were sent home again.

And an email sent to members just before 11am informed them of what had happened, apologised and told them they could use other David Lloyd centres in Bromsgrove, Birmingham and Solihull for the day.

West Midlands Police are now investigating after the club reported at 7.30am that copper had been stolen from inside its plant room.

Centre manager Jo Ward said: "We've got no water and are closed for the day while contractors try to fix the problem.

"The thieves took all the copper piping from the water pipes and we are now waiting for the police to arrive to investigate.

David Lloyd group spokesman Aurelija Dugnaite said: "We are cooperating with the police and reviewing our CCTV footage.

"The members have been notified and are welcome to use other David Lloyd clubs in the area. We would like to apologise sincerely to our members, who have obviously been inconvenienced by this incident. "

Bosses were hoping to re-open tomorrow.

Member Ian White, aged 49, of Wordsley, said: "I was just about to set off for my daily swim when I decided to check my emails. It's a good job I did because an email arrived from David Lloyd, which stopped me having a wasted journey."
