Stourbridge carpenter carves out £10k win on Deal or No Deal
A carpenter from the Black Country held his nerve to win £10,000 on television show Deal or No Deal – after he was told by the banker to smarten himself up.
Self-employed carpenter Mathew Churchman snapped up the cash on the Channel 4 television show which was broadcast last night.
Mr Churchman, from Stourbridge, told host Noel Edmonds he married his wife Gemma at Mary Stevens Hospice after the couple moved the wedding forward because his mother was seriously ill.
The couple gained special permission from the Archbishop of Canterbury to get married at the hospice. And after scooping the cash he said it would pay for a second wedding for his wife. Mr Churchman, who had chosen box 13, was sent away by the banker to smarten himself up.
After starting off the show with his long hair worn loose, a t-shirt and cardigan, after the first advert break he came back in a suit and tie with his hair tied back. The £250,000 box was opened quite early on in the game. He turned down offers of £13,000, £1,300, £9,000 and £11,500, and described having to decide the £11,500 offer as "the biggest decision of my life".
But he turned it down and then lost the £75,000. When he was left with 1p, £10, £50, £35,000 and £50,000, Mr Churchman was made an offer of £10,000.
Mathew described it as a "very good offer" and dealt. It turned out he only had £50 in his box.
Noel had told him: "You've won absolutely everybody over."
Mr Churchman said he was "elated" with the win.
