Hobbit-style huts at Alton Towers
A new fairytale holiday village is on the way to Alton Towers – complete with Hobbit-style homes to stay in.
The tourist attraction plans to build more than 150 lodges and huts to the north of its two hotels.
They will be based on folk tales, myths and legends and there will also be five homes that look like they are straight from Middle Earth.
The new development will create 75 new jobs at 500-acre Alton Towers which will open its new £18 million rollercoaster in March.
The village is aimed at meeting growing demand for overnight accommodation. The hotels currently only have 391 rooms.
Guests will be ferried to the accommodation near the water park by staff in golf-style buggies to ensure the area remains vehicle free. The Alton Towers Resort has submitted plans for the village to be built in two phases to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. Huts would have arched roofs dropping straight to the floor and lodge a decking area and front garden.
Each lodge would have room for up to five people. If planning permission is obtained it is hoped to open the first 85 lodges in 2014.
